Section 19 Duties

Section 19 of the Education Act 1996 places a duty on local authorities in England to make suitable alternative education arrangements for children of compulsory school age who cannot attend school. This could be because of illness, exclusion or any other reason.

Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)

EBSA is used to describe children and young people who find it difficult to attend school due to negative feelings, such as anxiety.

If your child is struggling to attend school for this reason, you should speak to your SENCo about what additional support is needed.

You may also want to refer your family to the inclusion and attendance team for support.
